Ganjoji Temple

Ganjoji Temple
This temple, which has a long history, is said to have been built at the suggestion of Oyori Murakuni, who achieved great success in the Jinshin War.
During the reign of Emperor Shomu, a casting plan for the Great Buddha was planned, and one of his retainers was ordered to travel the country in search of an excellent Buddhist sculptor. When I visited Ganjo-ji Temple, Kanzeon Bodhisattva appeared in my dream and told me, ``Tomorrow, go to the west. The next morning, as he was told to walk westward, he met a boy in the river watering the cows. So when I told him what I had to do, the child silently drew a picture of the Great Buddha on the riverbed. This boy-like man was a caster of Buddhist statues called "Kanamaru Hino". Hino Kanemaru went to the capital and successfully completed the Great Buddha. Due to his achievements, it is said that the monk Gyoki was ordered by Emperor Shomu to build Shichido Garan.
After that, most of the cathedral was destroyed by repeated war fires.
However, Buddhist statues escaped the fires of the war, and many cultural assets such as the statue of the eleven-faced Kanzeon Bodhisattva and the statue of Kongo Rikishi remain today.

Chujo-hime Vow Sakura, which is located in the precincts of Ganjo-ji Temple, is said to be a modified mountain cherry tree, and has 20 to 30 petals, and is designated as a national natural monument.
Chujo-hime, from whom the name is derived, visited Ganjo-ji Temple after moving from place to place to escape persecution from her stepmother. At this time, Chujo-hime was ill from the exhaustion of the long trip and anxiety, but she soon recovered. Therefore, a single cherry tree was planted as a sign of gratitude and a vow to protect women in future generations. This is Chujohime Vow Sakura.
Even now, during the cherry blossom season in early April, delicate flowers bloom.
